Maine Driver’s License

To obtain an official license from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) in Maine, drivers are required to need to attend an a state-approved driver's education class. Driving education is also offer by private companies as well.


The in-school requirements are 30 hours of driver instruction and 10 hours of on-the-road training. Maine is special as far as state requirements are concerned in that a parent needs to be in the back seat of the vehicle during their minor's practice for at least half the 10 hours.

First Maine DUI Offense

  • Jail – 30 Days

It is worth noting that drivers can stack up helpful points for good driving that can be use in the future to offset driving demerits (though conviction will still be on your record). The system is called Violation-free Credit System and you can obtain one credit for each year of no traffic violations.


You can only use credit points once within a year. You can also get a credit of up to three points for successful completion of the Maine Driving Dynamics course. This course is administered by the Bureau of Highway Safety.
