Getting To Know Your Boat Transporter

The most important step to take when you decide to transport your boat (or anything for that matter) is to open an informative dialogue with your transportation company. This is the time for you to ask questions about their company’s policies. You should ask about their refund policy and make sure it is absolutely clear to you. Large shipping errors are rare, but it’s better to be prepared for them in the event they take place. Next you have to make sure that their certified to be shipping boats, not fruits and vegetables!

Next you should discuss the payment and deposit options. Boat transporters will have different price points for the deposits. There are several factors for them to consider. If your boat is over a specific size in any given dimension, such as length or width—it will require a special permit in order to transport which will require more money. Because of the deposits, the payments that transporters accept are sometimes two fold. They’ll usually accept credit cards, cashier/certified checks and cash for the deposit. For the full payment they will likely only accept cashiers/certified checks or cash. But the entire point of this site is to get you to communicate with the transport company that you choose, so don’t go what you see here, make sure you ask questions and become aware of all of the policies that may affect your transport.

Getting Your Boat Ready To Ship

Once you’ve squared away payment and the transporter that you’re going to use there are still a few things that you have to take care of — and that’s getting your boat ready. Properly preparing your boat for shipping will reduce any additional fees and protect it. First of all, any covering you have on your boat, such as fabric or canvas, has to be firmly secured. This prevents you from losing a cover as well as making sure it protects your boat like you intended for it to do. Any damage incurred from the cover coming free or being loose will not be paid for by the transporter’s insurance. Then all life boats should be properly stowed away in the cabin or cockpit. All other items inside the boat have to be secured well. Some boat transport companies will allow you to use your own trail for the move, but it must be in excellent condition. If it isn’t, anytime the driver spends prepping or repairing it will be added onto the entire price as an extra fee. In addition, if it damages the boat then the transportation insurance won’t cover the cost.
