In the coming month, there is a vote pending in the U.S. Congress that is poised to change the way that federal investments will be made in highway construction and repair. Road funding has, in the past decades, been required to come from fees paid by the local population which will end up using the road. Under the new rules, the money will come from general tax revenue.

The highway funding bill, known as the “Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act,” provided transportation funding for the years 2005-09, and been extended several times since then. The latest extension will run out on the last day of March; however, it is likely to be extended again.
