When getting transferred, or moving to some other location you may have to ship your car. There are some initial preparations which the auto transfer company is required to do, and there are a few you should do before shipping it as well. The following is a checklist which will come in handy while preparing to ship your auto.
1. Inspect your car thoroughly: Wash the exterior. This will enable you to see the exterior and any damage. Take pictures of your car.
2. Disable you car alarm: If you cannot disable it then give written, detailed instructions to the driver who will ship the car, so that he can turn it off.
3. Inspect your car on arrival: Make sure no new damage has been caused to it.
4. Remove electronics and any other custom products from your car: Shipping companies generally check only the exterior of the vehicle. So you need to do it yourself. Remove DVD or CD players from your car.
5. Remove all of your personal belongings from the car: This removal will reduce the weight of the car and make it easy to transport it without any damage. Vehicles are often left unlocked so you should never leave your personal belongings inside.
6. Make sure your car is in good working condition: Get your car serviced and also get a maintenance check done before shipping. In some cases your car may be driven before it is delivered and maintenance issues may cause further damage or delay.
7. Remove devices: Devices like GPS systems, toll tags, and removable car phones should be removed from the car because these are expensive and can be stolen.
8. Crack the Windows: Leave the window of your car slightly open. This will lessen the pressure inside the car. This will ensure that your car windows are not blown out when there are altitude or temperature variations.
9. Insure your car: See to it that your car is insured. Auto companies usually do not cover the cost if your car is damaged due to normal bad road conditions.
10. Extra set of Keys: Keep a set of keys for yourself and one for the shipping company
11. Opt for enclosed auto transport when transporting a classic or expensive vehicle. Open car carriers are the most common and inexpensive mode of auto transportation but they’re not always the best choice.
12. Antennas: Remove the antenna from your car. If you have retractable antennas lower them. This will ensure that they do not break
13. Remove all extraneous auto accessories. This will be helpful in loading and unloading and your accessories will be secure.
14. Gas Level: Leave the gas tank ¼ full. This will reduce weight.
15. Add antifreeze: If your vehicle is to be shipped through cold locations, add antifreeze to the vehicle.
16. Fold in your mirrors: So that they avoid damage during loading and unloading.
17. Cover all holes of a convertible: This will make sure that the interior remains safe.
