Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety (CARS) is a non-profit organization with the goal of protecting consumers from fraud, injury, and abuse, as it relates to automobiles. The organization was founded by current president Rosemary Shahan, a long-time veteran of public service and a past victim of anti-consumer policies. Shahan serves on numerous boards including the Board of Directors of the Consumer Federation of America and of California. She is currently serving her fourth term on the CFA Board, an organization exceeding fifty million people. Shahan’s service work is done in an effort to prevent others from being victimized and enduring the hardships she experienced. As Ralph Nader sees it, “Rosemary Shahan is a real example of a citizen-activist. She is as tenacious as a bulldog, consistent as the Milky Way, and as humane in her own way as Mother Teresa.”

CARS has been recognized for its contributions by receiving the National Association of Consumer Advocate Award and the Consumer Action Award of Excellence. CARS has been involved in numerous campaigns of various issues spanning from fraudulent auto financing to unsafe automobile transportation from factory to dealership. Naturally, the organization has also been active in ensuring recalls occur before unnecessary injuries are sustained. Dateline NBC, the New York Times, 20/20, the Washington Post, and others, have highlighted the work and contribution of CARS and its members. Additional information can be obtained at or Rosemary Shahan can be reached at her office in Sacramento, California at (530) 759-9440.
